FTP Tutorial

I.  Using Windows Explorer (more difficult user interface but no software needed)
Windows Explorer is the tool you use when you open My Computer or My Network Places. Windows Explorer is tightly integrated with Internet Explorer and the transition from a local location is often seamless with a network location.

Opening an FTP site is simple with Windows Explorer.

OpenWindows Explorer by clicking My Computer:
Now to type in the address of the FTP server. We are using FTP instead of HTTP, so you will need to type in ftp://###.###.##.###

Here you only see what is hosted to the public. To login, right click the screen and click “Login As”. Alternatively, you may specify your login ID when typing the address in as ftp://loginname@###.###.##.###.

If you chose to click “Login As” you now need to type in your login name and password and now you may click and drag files between your computer and the remote filespace.

II. Using FTP Software (easier user interface but you must install special software)

Install one of the following freeware programs:
File-Zilla- We use File-Zilla.
SmartFTP
Other FTP freeware
