Stavros Niarchos Foundation Grant Awarded to ASCSA Libraries
School catalogers follow along with Steve Shadle’s informative and entertaining presentation
The American School of Classical Studies at Athens is pleased to announce a recent grant awarded to the School by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (www.SNF.org). The grant will support the detailed cataloging of more than 1,500 periodicals in the Blegen and Gennadius Libraries. The first phase of this cataloging project was completed during the first week of September. Catalogers of the Blegen and Gennadius Libraries participated in an advanced serials cataloging workshop presented by Steven C. Shadle, held at the School in Athens. A Serials Access Librarian at the University of Washington, Mr. Shadle is an experienced trainer in the Library of Congress’ Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program.  Participants in the workshop, which included catalogers from the School as well as from the British School of Archaeology, increased their knowledge of the rules and international standards for serials cataloging. This training will enable them to enter the vast and often unique holdings of all three libraries into the AMBROSIA online catalog, thereby making these important resources discoverable to scholars and researchers worldwide. The American School of Classical Studies at Athens is very grateful to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation for its generous support of the project, and to the University of Washington for allowing Steven Shadle the professional leave to come to Athens.
