There is a computer lab in the School that is available to Members at all times; it is equipped PCs, Macintoshes. printers, and scanners. A limited number of general software applications are available, including word processing, database, spreadsheet, and graphics programs, but members should make sure their computers are equipped with whatever programs they are accustomed to using.
•Internet access is available from computers in the computer lab or from Members’ own computers. Within the library, Members can connect to the internet both through wireless and ethernet connections. However, Members who wish to connect to the internet from their tables in the library should make every effort to bring computers equipped with wireless cards since the majority of seats in the library are not yet wired with ethernet connections. There is limited wireless internet access available in Loring Hall.
•The Blegen Library makes available a number of internet resources, including L’Année Philologique, JSTOR, Dyabola, TLG, and WorldCat; additional cd-roms are available from terminals in the library. More detailed information on the electronic resources of the Blegen Library is available here.
These resources are available to any networked computer on campus, and any student with a computer and an ethernet or wireless adapter. Only HTTP, HTTPS, and TELNET ports are available on the School’s network. FTP and POP3 are available upon request.
No, you do not need to own your own computer. You can use any of the computers in the computer lab. Yet, if you buy or have your own computer you do need an ethernet adapter to connect to the ASCSA network.
Yes, you can use your laptop to print by connecting it to our network printer (Parallel/Apple Talk/Ethernet). To use e-mail with your laptop you need to have the appropriate network hardware and a webmail account.
To connect your computer to the ASCSA network, you need a computer running at least Windows 95 or Mac OS 7.5. You also need an ethernet card. If your laptop does not come with an ethernet or a wireless network card built-in, then you will need an external card. If your computer does not even have a modem, then the best choice is to get an ethernet + modem card for your portable. This way you can use this card even when you leave the ASCSA. You can get the card installed and the software configured at the Computer Store (3Com, Intel).
The IT assistant is available in the computer lab Monday–Friday. Or you can e-mail the department at ITDepartment@ascsa.edu.gr.
The computer lab is located at the ground floor of the main building. It is open 24 hours/day.
Students can print in the computer lab on the networked laser printer or the dot matrix printer. Laser printing costs 10 cents/page. In order to print, you need to use the computer lab computers or your own computer connecting it directly to the printer.
Visiting members can access their web-based e-mail by internet browsers or via telnet. If your current e-mail is not a web-based server, then you will need to create an account with a free web-based provider (e.g., yahoo, hotmail, gmail).
