Engravings
Joannes Gennadius started collecting engravings for the purpose of forming a series of historical representations, topographical views, and illustrations of portraits and costumes relating to Greece and the Near East. This “Historic Series” includes also a collection of specimens of Greek and Near Eastern newspapers and periodicals. A second series of engravings relates chiefly to the history of the book showing activities related to writing, printing, illumination, and bookbinding. A third series, specimens of the “Various modes and styles of engravings”, relates exclusively to the art of engraving. There are also maps and drawings relating to the three series of engravings, of Royal folio and Atlas folio size and a collection of colored trade, theatrical and other posters. Last but not least, a minor collection shows a variety of paper water marks and specimens of rare paper types.
