Gennadius Family

This section contains mainly the published works of George Gennadius and of other members of the family, the published works of the late Samuel Laing, father of Madame Gennadius, and the Library’s holdings of material of the Benizelos family (a descendant of which was the founder’s mother, Artemis). The collection begins with the works of Gennadius, the first Patriarch of Constantinople after the Fall, collected because of a tradition that George Gennadius was a descendant of his. Malcolm Laing, the historiographer of Joannes Gennadius and his wife Florence Scotland was the grandfather of Madame Gennadius. His son Samuel Laing was distinguished as a great financier and his works went through many editions. Finally, Procopius Benizelos was married to Joannes Gennadius’s maternal grandmother. His grandmother was the only female survivor of the family of Panagiotes Codricas
