Magoula Pefkakia, to the south of Volos, a well known prehistoric site, occupied from the Final Neolithic, to the end of the Mycenaean period, was first excavated by D. Theocharis and Vl.Milojčić, in the 1950ies and 60ies. The first definite evidence for a Mycenaean settlement beyond the previously excavated area, were located by A. Batziou-Efstathiou, between 1986-1991.

During the last season of excavation at the site was located part of a new, undisturbed building complex, of LH IIIA2-IIIB date, when the settlement had reached its peak. The idiosyncratic and unexpected character of the architectural features and the portable finds from this complex, invites serious speculation about the use of the building. The sudden and final abandonment of the settlement occurs in the end of the LH IIIB2/LH IIIC early, at the close of the 13th c. BC and the beginning of the 12th c. BC, i.e. just after the end of the Mycenaean Koine and the destruction of the palatial centres in the south.
