Hesperia 80.1 Now Online

Hesperia enters its 80th year of publication with issue 80.1, which is now at press. The issue contains three articles including an excavation report from Azoria, Crete, an analysis of the ancient circuit wall of Athens, and a return visit to Thucydides and Pylos. The circuit-wall article is lavishly illustrated in color and includes a foldout plate. Subscribers can read the issue now.

Excavations in the Archaic Civic Buildings at Azoria in 2005–2006, by Donald C. Haggis and colleagues, publishes the results of recent fieldwork at the dramatic site of Azoria in northeast Crete. The authors explore the contexts and assemblages of three public buildings and draw intriguing conclusions about the nature of communal dining and the role of ritual at the site. Read more.

The Ancient Circuit Wall of Athens: Its Changing Course and the Phases of Construction, by Annita Theocharaki, is a tour de force in its documentation of the physical remains of the Athenian circuit wall as it evolved through 11 centuries and more than a dozen construction phases. Supplementing and modifying earlier work by Travlos and others, the article is essential reading for scholars of ancient Athens. Read more.

The Topography of the Pylos Campaign and Thucydides’ Literary Themes, by Matthew A. Sears, takes up a topic treated previously in Hesperia: the motivation behind Thucydides’ seemingly deliberate distortion of the topographical setting in his account of the Spartan defeat at Pylos in the late 5th century B.C.
