Hesperia partners with JSTOR on the Current Scholarship Program
Hesperia Partners with the JSTOR Current Scholarship Program
Andrew Reinhard and Tracey CullenOn August 1, 2011, the full run of Hesperia (1932–present) will be available to subscribers on the JSTOR platform. In 2002, Hesperia joined a relatively small number of journals archived and made available online at JSTOR. Today, JSTOR hosts more than 1,400 academic journals, 200 of which pertain to the ancient world. In 2011, JSTOR launched the Current Scholarship Program, which makes both archival and current scholarship available to subscribers. Once again, Hesperia is among the earliest participants in a list that includes the American Journal of Archaeology, Classical Antiquity, Classical Journal, Journal of Near Eastern Studies, Near Eastern Archaeology, and others.
As part of Hesperia’s participation in the Program, current issues of the journal will be archived and preserved for the future via Portico. Both Portico and JSTOR are services of ITHAKA, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping the academic community use digital technologies to preserve the scholarly record and to advance research and teaching in sustainable ways.
The addition of Hesperia to the Current Scholarship Program will benefit readers as well as the journal. In addition to offering the familiar JSTOR interface to researchers, the Program provides enhanced capacities for posting supplementary datasets, color images, and other material more suited to an online environment, all assigned a digital object identifier (DOI) and stable URL to ensure that material not included in the print edition of the journal can be retrieved in the future. JSTOR’s reach currently extends to more than 7,000 libraries in 160 countries. Approximately 1,000 institutions in developing countries receive free or deeply discounted access to JSTOR, further heightening the profile of Hesperia around the world, and bringing in new readers and, potentially, new authors.
The American School of Classical Studies at Athens is committed to continuing the print edition of Hesperia for those who prefer to read the issue between covers. All subscriptions to the print edition now include online access at no additional cost. It is also possible to subscribe only to the online version. Instructions on how to access current issues of the journal, along with the back issues already available on JSTOR, have been sent to current subscribers by email and can also be found on the Hesperia webpage.
