The American School of Classical Studies at Athens

ASCSA Permissions, Fees, and Terms of Use

Authors of articles, books, and other media (both print and digital) and producers of content who wish to use images produced by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) must abide by the terms and conditions regarding rights and permission as stated below, without exception. In 2012, the ASCSA standardized its terms, conditions, fees, and types of permission for all departments. To request an image and permission to publish it, familiarize yourself with these terms of use and then contact the relevant department for fulfillment. Contact information for each of the ASCSA departments is at the bottom of the page.

In the future, image permissions and reproduction requests will be handled through an automated process online. Until then, please follow the procedures and terms described on this page.

Notification of Copyright

Documents, photographs, slides, and other media owned by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens may be protected by copyright, trademark, or a related interest not owned by the ASCSA. It is the responsibility of the applicant to determine whether any such rights exist and to obtain necessary permission for use.

Permissions

The ASCSA can grant permissions for the use of its media content for both non-commercial and commercial use. Permissions and fulfillment fees may apply depending on how you intend to use this media. The ASCSA may choose to grant either perpetual or one-time permissions, and this decision is made on a case-by-case basis. For most non-commercial uses, perpetual rights are granted.

Perpetual Rights

The ASCSA can grant non-exclusive, worldwide permission in all languages in all editions, print and electronic, to you to reproduce one or more images as long as the following conditions are met: the image(s) for the publication by its author(s) are allowed only a) in one work in print at any one time (one ISBN or two if hard/paper simultaneously plus eBooks for those); b) for a book of which the author(s) of the initial print edition is an author of the new version/edition; c) beyond the original Work only in a Work that has a copyright registration indicating it is a derivative work and identifying the earlier publication as a prior work on which the derivative work is based. Unless otherwise stated, the following credit line must be used in display and/or publication. When instructed, include the name of the artist, photographer or author followed by the correct credit line. Example: Photo C. Mauzy. American School of Classical Studies at Athens, Agora Excavations. The full list of credit lines to use is below. You also agree to provide the Gennadius Library (in the case of publication of Gennadeion-provided images either from the Library or its Archives), or the Blegen Library (for all other instances) with a gratis copy of the publication (if applicable) in which the ASCSA’s materials appear.

One-Time Rights

The ASCSA can grant non-exclusive, worldwide, permissions to you to reproduce (one time only), image(s) in print and in the print edition’s directly related electronic format(s). Unless otherwise stated, one of the following credit lines must be used in display and/or publication.

ASCSA Credit Lines

Depending on which department provides your image(s) or other media, you will be asked to use one of the following credit lines:

  • American School of Classical Studies at Athens, Agora Excavations
  • American School of Classical Studies at Athens, Corinth Excavations
  • American School of Classical Studies at Athens, Gennadius Library

  • American School of Classical Studies at Athens, Wiener Laboratory
  • American School of Classical Studies at Athens (this credit line will be used for requests for images used in ASCSA Publications that are not from any of the ASCSA’s departments)

In some instances, you will be asked to credit the photographer ahead of the ASCSA credit line. Example: Photo C. Mauzy. American School of Classical Studies at Athens, Agora Excavations.

Fees

In some instances, you may be charged for the use of ASCSA images. Depending on your needs, you may need to request permission to use an image in a publication and also request a print-ready digital copy of that image. Other fees may apply including image discovery (staff assistance in helping you find images for your publication) and express processing (Athenian Agora and Corinth only). Query your ASCSA contact for a full description of these fees.

Payment of any and all fees are accepted in either euros or U.S. dollars in the form of cash, checks, or money orders by post or in person. At this time, credit/debit card payments are accepted only by the Publications Office in Princeton, New Jersey, for fees concerning images from Hesperia and monographs of all series excluding Agora and Corinth volumes, Gennadeion Monographs, and The New Griffon.

Permissions Fees

Each ASCSA department is responsible for collecting fees for the permissions it grants. Your ASCSA contact will work with you to arrange for payment if payment is required. NB: Even if permission to use an image is granted, you may also need to request a copy of that image for use in your publication. See Image Request Fees for details.

Image Request Fees

Each ASCSA department is responsible for collecting fees for the reproduction requests that it fulfills. Your ASCSA contact will work with you to arrange for payment if payment is required. This fee may be waived at the discretion of an ASCSA department.

Permissions-seekers who are able to help themselves in finding images (via the ASCSA's online collections or elsewhere) to use for their research and/or publication will not be charged an image discovery fee.

All images provided by the ASCSA will be digital (TIFF format unless otherwise requested) at a minimum resolution of 300 ppi (1200 ppi for line art) and will be delivered by either email, download link, or in the case of in-person requests, CD/DVD/USB.
