Facilities & Equipment

The Wiener Laboratory is situated on the lower level of the School. It consists of a main room with tables for strewing materials that also houses the Lab’s comparative collections and much of the Wiener Laboratory Library including reference books and journals. Smaller laboratories include a wet lab with chemical storage, a fume hood, muffle furnace and oven; an X-ray lab with a shielded X-ray unit and an automatic processor for developing radiographic films; a microscope lab with a variety of microscopes including a metallographic micro scope, a stereomicroscope and a polarizing light microscope, along with digital and film cameras for preparing photomicrographs. There is also a wide range of basic equipment supporting the research interests of scholars in the Wiener Laboratory. Balances, calipers, rock saws, sieves, scanners, and grinders and polishers for thin section preparation are available.

A more detailed inventory of equipment is available to assist scholars hoping to work in the laboratory with their pre-trip planning.

The Wiener Laboratory Library
Catalogued as part of the Blegen Library but separately located in the laboratory, this reference collection contains approximately 2,000 books and around 40 periodicals dealing with archaeological science, including Science, Nature, Archaeometry, the Journal of Archaeological Science, the American Journal of Physical Anthropology, Geoarchaeology, and Archaeozoologia. The library also includes a large number of identification manuals, dissertations, reference books, maps and newsletters.
