Zoe Keramea: Between Surface and Space, New Year’s Cards 1991 - 2026
For 36 years, Zoe Keramea has been sending out a hand made card for the New Year.
It starts with laboriously hand-carved sealstones, the earliest form of printing, for the first decade. Keramea progresses through offset printing of paper cutout drawings for the second decade and for the last 16 years the cards become interactive, sent digitally to be printed, cut out and constructed into three-dimensional ornaments by the receiver. This is an artwork that involves the participation of thousands of people. The carved sealstones, the two-dimensional cards and the cut and folded ones into three-dimensional objects will be shown together with a documentation of their making at the Gennadius Library’s reading room from December 8, 2026 to January 7, 2027.
The exhibition will be accompanied by the publication Zoe Keramea: Between Surface and Space - New Year’s Cards 1991-2026, with a text by art historian Nena Tsouti Schillinger about Keramea’s cards and their relationship to her overall body of work. Included in this book will also be a selection of die-cut cards to be folded by the reader.
