In the context of the celebrations for Athens as 2018 World Book Capital, the Blegen Library is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES: THE ROLE OF BOOKS IN FULFILLING THE MISSION OF THE AMERICAN SCHOOL OF CLASSICAL STUDIES AT ATHENS

The mission of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens is to advance knowledge of Greece in all periods, through a multidisciplinary approach which has constantly encouraged scholars to move beyond traditional views of Greek civilization and to push the chronological and methodological boundaries commonly associated with the study of this area of the Mediterranean. As part of this commitment, the School maintains a robust publication program, which allows researchers with different backgrounds and perspectives to contribute to its overarching goals.

The publications of the American School reflect the breadth and scope of the research it supports. In particular, the books on display in this exhibition show how famous ancient sites and regions have had very long and complex lives that need to be traced through different historical periods in order to be fully understood. They also illustrate the abundance of information which researchers can obtain when they are able to study archaeological finds in association with their context and to employ advanced techniques of scientific analysis.

The exhibition will be open from September 3 to September 21, 2018 in the Reading Room of the Gennadius Library of the ASCSA (61 Souidias St., 106 76 Athens) during the regular hours of operation of the library itself (Monday-Wednesday and Friday 9:00-17:00, Thursday 9:00-20:00, Saturday 9:00-14:00, Sunday closed).
