Loring HallThe American School of Classical Studies at Athens is pleased to announce that construction on the new Student Center is underway. The expansion and renovation of the School’s aging residential and dining facilities are expected to be completed by June 2021.

About the Student Center Campaign

The Student Center Campaign was launched in October 2018 to raise funds for a complete renovation of the three buildings that serve as the intellectual and residential heart of the American School: Loring Hall, the Annex, and West House. Originally built in the 1920s, these facilities have endured nearly 90 years of service year-round and at full capacity. The buildings are now woefully inadequate, with one common bathroom per floor, minimal accommodations for couples and families, obsolete wiring, no elevators, and perhaps most significantly, no air conditioning—which, in this era of rising temperatures, is no longer tolerable.

This transformative project will increase housing capacity, reduce energy consumption, add state-of-the-art features and technology, and bring the complex up to the latest technical standards. At the same time, the historic appearance of the buildings will be preserved, ensuring they honor the past while meeting the needs of the future.

The Student Center will remain the place where members of the community gather for meals, tea, ouzo, holiday celebrations, and lectures—a source of lifelong professional and personal relationships that characterize the collegial and intellectually vibrant atmosphere of the School. Nowhere else in the world is there such a critical mass of enthusiastic experts, actively engaged with the material evidence of Greek culture. The modernized Student Center will greatly enhance this experience and benefit the School community for generations to come.

Support the Campaign

The goal of the Student Center campaign is $9.4 million, inclusive of a maintenance endowment. Thanks to generous supporters, $6.63 million has been raised to date.
