New Publication: Greek and Roman Coins in the Athenian Agora

The American School of Classical Studies at Athens is pleased to announce the publication of a new edition of Greek and Roman Coins in the Athenian Agora (Agora Picture Book 15), by Fred S. Kleiner.
More than 75,000 coins have been found during excavations at the Agora, many minted in the city but others brought from Athens’s far-flung commercial contacts. Together they are a testament to the city’s broad regional influence, and they help trace the political shifts and cultural and commercial exchanges that took place over many centuries of Athenian history. After explaining the techniques of coin production, including a description of the building that may have served as the Athenian mint, Kleiner takes a chronological approach and illustrates a wide range of ancient coins, making this guide a useful aid to the identification of common Greek and Roman coinage. Originally published in 1975, this updated edition features stunning color photographs throughout and is available in both English and modern Greek.
The Agora Picture Book series offers a captivating view of the Athenian Agora, one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. Centered around a distinct theme, each volume explores the fascinating objects and monuments uncovered at the heart of ancient Athens, revealing the city’s rich history and illuminating the daily life of its residents. With a focus on visual storytelling, these concise yet informative booklets are perfect for readers of all ages, combining vivid imagery with historical context to bring the ancient world to life. Kleiner’s Greek and Roman Coins in the Athenian Agora inaugurates an exciting new phase of this important series. Every volume in this series will be reissued in an updated, full-color edition and translated into modern Greek, allowing a new generation to enjoy these timeless classics.
