Dear Accepted Members for the 2020-2021 Academic Year

With the spread of COVID-19 and the uncertainty of its duration, we are writing concerning the 2020-2021 academic year at the American School

Currently, the School is planning to carry out the full 2020-2021 academic programs starting in September. However, given the ever-changing situation, we will reevaluate this plan in June 2020. If we are forced to cancel all or part of the programing for the 2020-2021 academic year, we will issue another update in June in order to notify everyone.

We realize that some accepted applicants may not be able to wait until June, and so we are offering them the opportunity to defer their fellowship and/or admission until the following academic year. If they are holding a fellowship which lasts less than an academic year, they may choose either to defer until later in the 2020-2021 academic year or to defer to the next academic year completely.

If we are forced to cancel the 2020-2021 academic programming in June, all acceptances and fellowships will carry over to the 2021-2022 academic year. Additionally, if an accepted applicant is holding a School fellowship that stipulates, the ASCSA will cover the cost of room and board, in the event that the current COVID 19 pandemic prevents them from taking up this fellowship in 2020-2021, and if there is no room in Loring Hall due to numbers of deferred fellowships, they will be provided with funds to cover the costs of housing and meals off campus.

For any questions, please contact the Programs Office at programs@ascsa.org

* For those currently holding or about to take up fellowships at the Wiener Laboratory:

Fellows newly accepted for the 2020-2021 Academic Year may begin their work as soon as the Wiener Laboratory re-opens for scholars and as soon as fellows can be in Athens. This date will be determined on the basis of the measures applied by the Greek government to restrict the spread of the COVID-19 and in terms of related travel restrictions.

Current fellows of the Wiener Laboratory can continue their tenure after the end of the lockdown mandated by the Greek government and when travel restrictions are lifted. Fellows should contact the director of the Lab (Takis Karkanas, TKarkanas@ascsa.edu.gr) to discuss any extensions to the tenure of their fellowships due to the temporary closure of the Wiener Laboratory.
