Research Topic: Music and Memory among the Sephardic Jews of Rhodes: From the "Homeland" to the Diaspora and the Internet

Maria Papavasilopoulou is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Music Studies at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. The title of her research is “Music and memory among the Sephardic Jews of Rhodes: from the ‘homeland’ to the diaspora and the internet.” Maria holds an Integrated Master in Music Studies, specializing in Ethnomusicology and Cultural Anthropology, a M.Ed. in the Technology of Education and a B.A. in Classical Philology. As a Schwarz Fellow for Research on Music she will explore the Nickolas G. Mavris Papers to investigate the folk music and folklore of Rhodes and the Dodecanese in a local and translocal context, in connection to the Dodecanese diaspora in Egypt and the U.S. She is also the recipient of a Fulbright fellowship that will allow her to investigate further the Rhodian Jewish diaspora in the U.S.
