SCOPE AND CONTENT

The records document the history, organization and function of the Gennadius Library of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens dating back to the announcement of J. Gennadius’ gift of his library to the ASCSA in 1923 and the official opening of the building in 1926 until the present day. The material, however, does not include only documentation on the history and governance of the library (for example, the founding of the library, its legal environment, its building). Records consist of documents created to assist in the conduct of the Library’s official business and contain information needed for operations and accomplishment of its mission (for example, correspondence with book vendors). The material also includes documents created outside the routines of daily business which document consciously events or actions taking place (for example, exhibits, lectures organized by the Library). A well-established program for filing ensures that records received by the Archives Department and catalogued is accessible by those interested not only in the business value of them but also in the preservation of the institutional memory. Sometimes, the lines between official duties and personal and/or academic pursuits of post holders, particularly in the early decades of the operation of the Library, are often hard to distinguish. For example, correspondence of directors may contain also material related to research and personal interests among their official correspondence as librarians or directors.

The records are arranged into eight series depicting the functions and initiatives of the Library.

Records created before 1980 are available for research, although researchers should be aware of the General Data Protection Regulation 2016/679 (GDPR), when accessing documents that may include personal data.
