Putting Greece's Past Together Since 1881

For 138 years, the American School of Classical Studies at Athens has been putting together the pieces of Greece’s past. Although we are the oldest and largest U.S. overseas research center, we cannot do this alone. Our historic institution has been privately funded since its inception, so we depend on support from friends like you to help us continue our vital mission of preserving and promoting Greece’s rich heritage.

There is no other place in the world quite like the American School. We offer students and scholars unparalleled opportunities to explore Greece, excavate at ancient sites, study in our renowned libraries, conduct research in our state-of-the-art laboratory, and share discoveries through our lectures, exhibitions, and award-winning publications. None of this would be possible without you.

There has never been a more exciting time to give than now. Innovations in science and technology are allowing us to answer questions about the past in ways that were once inconceivable. Your contribution will enable us to uncover knowledge faster than ever before and elevate the study of ancient Greece to greater heights. Thank you for your consideration.

Joining the Pieces of Greece's History

Marble Satyr Head S451

In 1903, a fragment of a 2,000-year-old marble satyr head was unearthed by the American School during early excavations at Ancient Corinth. More than a century later, the missing piece of the face was discovered at the opposite end of the site. In 2011, American School scholar Aileen Ajootian matched the fragments and joined the pieces together, making the head of this sculpture whole once more.
