Research Topic: Neanderthals of the Ionian Sea: Hunting Strategies and Adaptation in Dynamic Landscapes

Nicholas Andrés Gonzalez is a Zooarchaeologist and PhD Candidate in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Connecticut and a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow. As a researcher who studies animal bones from archaeological sites, he explores how Neanderthals hunted and survived on the Ionian Islands during the Middle Paleolithic, and how Homo sapiens did so in southeastern Sicily during the Upper Paleolithic. His research ultimately investigates how and when early humans adapted to islands and other isolated environments, how quickly they spread into these habitats, and how they survived throughout the ice ages.
