Research Topic: The Herms of the Athenian Agora
Pelayo Huerta-Segovia is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Ancient History at the University of Santiago de Compostela. His research focuses on the art, archaeology, topography, and material religion of Ancient Greece, with particular emphasis on Athens. He received his Ph.D. from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid with the dissertation “The Herm in Athens and Attica: from the Origin to the Early Classical Period. Objects, Spaces, and Visualization,” the first systematic study of the Archaic and Classical material record of Attic herms.
Pelayo has held several international fellowships supporting research stays in Florence, Rome (EEHAR-CSIC), Geneva, and, especially, Athens (NKUA, BSA, SIA, ASCSA). He also carried out a funded research project (Banco Sabadell Foundation, 2024–2025) on the topography of the Archaic Acropolis as a Visiting Researcher at the Swedish Institute at Athens.
As part of his current project, he is studying sculptural material from the Agora excavations through autopsy, while investigating the history and topography of the so-called “Herms” area and the Stoa of the Herms. This work will contribute to a collaborative Blue Volume dedicated to the north side of the Athenian Agora.
