Research Topic: Environmental History, with a Focus on Lives in Earthquake-prone Landscapes

Phoebe Thompson is a 4th-year PhD student in Ancient History at the University of Pennsylvania. She received her MPhil in Archaeological Science from the University of Cambridge in 2021. Her research focuses on the social, religious, and political valences of human-seismic interaction in the ancient Mediterranean world. Using epigraphic, textual, and archaeological evidence, her dissertation examines people's lived experience of seismic activity across various scales during the third century BCE - second century CE in the southeastern Aegean. Phoebe has participated in archaeological projects in Scotland and Sicily, and is the Ceramics Team Supervisor for the American Excavations at Morgantina: Agora Valley Project.

While at the ASCSA, she looks forward to developing her understanding of the environments and landscapes of archaeological sites in Greece.
