Διεθνής Ημέρα Βιβλίου 2020. Γιορτάζουμε τα γενέθλια της Γενναδείου Βιβλιοθήκης

Η Γεννάδειος Βιβλιοθήκη εγκαινιάστηκε στις 23 Απριλίου 1926. Επιλέχτηκε η γιορτή του Αγίου Γεωργίου για να τιμηθεί η μνήμη του πατέρα του Ιωάννη Γενναδίου. Κατά σύμπτωση το 1995 η UNESCO όρισε αυτή τη μέρα ως Διεθνή Ημέρα Βιβλίου.

World Book Day 2020: Celebrating the 94th Birthday of the Gennadius Library

The Gennadius Library was inaugurated on April 23, 1926. The Feast of Saint George was chosen to celebrate the memory of the father of Joannes Gennadius. By sheer coincidence in 1995 UNESCO chose to celebrate this very day as World Book and Copyright Day.

On the occasion of Easter and recent concerns about social distancing, we are presenting an icon whose subject focuses on the crucial importance of touch and faith. The icon represents the Doubting Thomas and is a gift of Helen Stathatos to the Gennadius Library.

Πρόκειται για εικόνα της Επτανησιακής Σχολής που απεικονίζει την ψηλάφηση του Θωμά και προέρχεται από δωρεά της Ελένης Σταθάτου στη Γεννάδειο Βιβλιοθήκη.

The indexing of hundreds of travelogues of the 16th to the 19th centuries in the digital platform TravelTrails is a rich source of information for various subjects. Based on recent events we searched the term (tag) ‘plagues,’ which was endemic for centuries in the Byzantine and later in the Ottoman Empire.

Η ψηφιακή αποδελτίωση εκατοντάδων περιηγητικών κειμένων από τον 16ο ως τον 19ο αιώνα στο πρόγραμμα TravelTrails αποτελεί πλούσια πηγή πληροφοριών για ποικίλα θέματα. Με αφορμή πρόσφατα γεγονότα αναζητήσαμε τον όρο ‘λοιμοί’ (tag: plagues), που αποτελούσε ενδημικό φαινόμενο για αιώνες στα εδάφη της Βυζαντινής και της μετέπειτα Οθωμανικής αυτοκρατορίας.
