BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Bayard Stockton was born 27 October 1930 in Lausanne, Switzerland and grew up in New York City and Long Island, New York. He attended Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts in the late 40s-early 50s but did not graduate. From 1951 to 1957 he was a case officer for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in Berlin. (For details about this period of his life, see King Harris, “Bayard Stockton 1930‒2006”, a 10 August 2006 obituary in the Santa Barbara Independent.) He resigned in 1957 and was hired as Newsweek’s bureau chief in Bonn. Two years later, he was transferred to London. In 1961, he left Newsweek and free-lanced in London.

With an interest in writing a book or a series of articles about Greece during WWII and the immediate post-war period, he moved to Athens in 1964 for what he described as an indefinite stay. He was hired by ABC and Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR), American and West German radio and television organizations, to cover Greece, Cyprus and Turkey. He was also a stringer for the Sunday New York Herald Tribune and The Reporter.

Shortly after his move to Athens, Stockton began researching the 1941 Battle of Crete, which he described as the first massive airborne invasion in history. In a letter, he explained how he became interested in this battle: “I recently did a rather grisly documentary in Crete for Cologne on the fact that in 1965, there are still more than 7,400 German bodies lying unburied in a monastery in Western Crete. This gave me the opportunity to learn something about the war on the island, and I have now conceived an idea of doing an hour-long documentary on the campaign and its aftermath—perhaps one of the unique struggles in WWII.” (3 October 1965 letter to Peter Crane, Box 1 Folder 3.) Stockton corresponded with over one-hundred British, Australian, New Zealander, German and Greek participants in the Battle of Crete. These letters, as well as diaries and newspaper articles are of great interest. Unfortunately, he could find no publisher or newspaper or television station interested in this project, probably, as he was told, because 1966 marked the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Crete and there were already too many books and documentaries about the subject. (Boxes 1‒7, Envelope 17)

In 1967, two years after his arrival in Greece, the Greek government was overthrown by the military. The Greek Military Dictatorship (1967‒1974) comprise his second collection of papers, which consist almost entirely of Greek government press releases and brochures, mostly English-language newspaper clippings and some photographs. His research resulted in two books: The New Approach: The Greek Revolution and New Democracy (1970) and Phoenix with a Bayonet: A Journalist’s Interim Report on the Greek Revolution (1971). (Boxes 8‒16)

In addition, at this time, he collected information and conducted interviews for an article he planned to write about the Grande Bretagne Hotel and environs. (Box 13 Folder 2d.)

For a short period, Stockton was the news editor of an English-language daily, Athens Mirror, which had been started in 1972. On 18 November 1972, the day after the Polytechnic Uprising, he wrote an editorial in support of the Greek Military Dictatorship. He quit the next day. (Richard LeBlond, “The Stillness of the Acropolis” in The Montréal Review, May 2014.)

Stockton returned to the United States in 1980, first free-lancing in San Francisco then, in 1981, settling in Santa Barbara where he was copy-editor for the Santa Barbara News-Press and an Associated Press award-winning commentator, host and reviewer at KMGQ’s local radio program “Santa Barbara’s Good Companions”. In the following years he wrote Catapult: The Biography of Robert A. Monroe (1989), a mind expansion pioneer; Nothing to Fear (1999), a fictionalized account of the Y2K scare and Flawed Patriot: A Biography of CIA Legend Bill Harvey (2006).

Bayard Stockton died in Santa Barbara, California in 2006.
