Ottoman History

Books, pamphlets, albums and other materials on the history of neighboring countries are organized geographically, with subsections on the Balkans, the history of the Jews, the history of the Near East and Turkish history. The collection of Turkish history has close to 1500 entries, and it is significant that sixteen of the Library’s earliest printed books (1470-1500) are related to Turkish affairs.

A fine collection of costume books in the Gennadius Library date from the 15th to the 20th centuries. The portrayal of the costumes, in addition to the pleasure it offers to the eyes, forms also an excellent source on the customs, the everyday activities, and the social life in general of Greece from the Turkish conquest and after.
