BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE - ΒΙΟΓΡΑΦΙΚΟ ΣΗΜΕΙΩΜΑ
Miltiades Ath. Spyrou was born in Komotini in 1934 and completed his secondary education at the New Philadelphia (Attica) High School. He completed his military service in the Navy, he obtained a Diploma of Radio Officer of the Merchant Navy, with which he served for four years abroad. During one of his trips to Calcutta, he was impressed by the culture of India and decided to study it more systematically and extensively. He earned his first B.A. degree in Western and Indian Philosophy from the Rabindranath’s Vishva Bharati University in Santiniketan, West Bengal, while also taking courses in the Sanskrit language and literature at the Sanskrit College in Calcutta. H obtained M.A. degrees in philosophy from Jadavpur University in Calcutta, as well as Indian philosophy and religion from Benares Hindu University in 1966 in Varanasi (Benares). In March 1971 he was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy by Benares Hindu University successfully completing his thesis on “Eudaemonistic Trends in Indian Philosophy” for which he was awarded the “Narasingh Prasad Hari Prasad Buch Metaphysics Prize”, first given to a European citizen. He received scholarships from both the Greek Government (1968-1971) and the Ford Foundation (1963-1964). He spoke English, French, Hindi, Bengali and Sanskrit.
Returning to Greece, he served in the Greek National Tourism Organization for 24 years, including his tenure as Director of the Organization’s offices in Australia and New Zealand from 1975 to 1996. He was also a member of the Institute for International Studies in Heidelberg. Throughout his service, he continued to engage in the study of Indian philosophy and Greek Indian studies to which he devoted himself fully after his retirement. Working independently and with private resources, he continued his research and writing work with his wife Kate and his son Arthur (Athanasios) by his side. In the last years, his research project focused mainly on the Greek Community of Bengal and on the Greek Indologist Dimitrios Galanos, for which he regularly traveled to Calcutta, Dhaka, Varanasi, New Delhi and London to collect valuable material from the archives and local newspapers of the time. M. Spyrou died in Athens in 2019.
The 2,000 books of Indological content that he collected throughout his life were donated to the National Library of Greece by his son, Athanasios Spyrou, who was appointed to Athens as Australia’s Ambassador in December 2019, three months after the death of M. Spyrou. The voluminous archive of M. Spyrou was donated to the American School of Classical Studies in Athens by his son A. Spyrou in 2023.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
Το Αρχείο Μ. Σπύρου δωρήθηκε στην Αμερικανική Σχολή το έτος 2023 από τον γιο του Μ. Σπύρου, τον Αθανάσιο (Arthur) Σπύρου, ο οποίος από το έτος 2019, διετέλεσε πρεσβευτής της Αυστραλίας στην Ελλάδα.
Το Αρχείο περιλαμβάνει τέσσερις ενότητες.
Series I: The Greeks in India. Σε 19 φακέλους καταχωρίσθηκε υλικό το οποίο αφορά την παρουσία, εγκατάσταση και δράση των Ελλήνων στην Ινδία από το τέλος του 18ου αιώνα μέχρι σήμερα. Βιβλιογραφικά και αρχειακά τεκμήρια για την ίδρυση της πρώτης ελληνικής κοινότητας στη Καλκούτα, καθώς και στην Dhaka (του σημερινού Μπαγκλαντές), οικογενειακή ιστορία των πρώτων εγκατεστημένων Ελλήνων και της οικογένειας Panioty, και άλλων Ελλήνων περιλαμβάνονται στην ενότητα. Σημαντικό μέρος του υλικού αφορά στην ίδρυση της Ελληνορθόδοξης εκκλησίας της Μεταμορφώσεως στην Καλκούτα και τη λειτουργία της με τα καταστατικά και τα Πρακτικά αυτής, καθώς και στη μετέπειτα ιστορία του ναού μέχρι σήμερα, όπως επίσης καταγραφές και φωτογραφίες των τάφων Ελλήνων. Στην ενότητα περιλαμβάνεται ιδιαίτερης αξίας και σημασίας πρωτότυπο υλικό με διαθήκες Ελλήνων της Καλκούτας από τα τέλη του 18ου αιώνα μέχρι το 1875, όπως και ιστορική εργασία του Μ. Σπύρου για τις διαθήκες.
Series II: The Indologist Demetrios Galanos. Στους φακέλους 20 ώς 32 περιλαμβάνονται προσωπικά έγγραφα του πρώτου Έλληνα ινδολόγου Δ. Γαλανού (1760 – 1833), η ζωή, η δράση και οι μελέτες του. Αντίγραφα των εκδόσεων στην ελληνική γλώσσα ινδικών έργων, αντίγραφα από τα άρθρα του (υπό το ψευδώνυμο Φιλάνθρωπος) σε αγγλόφωνες εφημερίδες της Ινδίας, η εκδοθείσα ιστορική εργασία του Μ. Σπύρου περί του Δ. Γαλανού, καθώς επίσης και αντίγραφο του χειρογράφου αναφορικά με το ταξίδι του Πανταλέοντος Γαλανού (Pantaleon Galanos), ανεψιού του ινδολόγου, στη Ινδία το έτος 1817, όπως και εργασία του Μ. Σπύρου περί του P. Galanos.
Series III: History of British India. Στους φακέλους 33 ώς 45 καταχωρούνται βιβλία και βιβλιογραφία με σημειώσεις περί της ιστορίας της Ινδίας κατά τη Βρετανική κυριαρχία, των πόλεων Καλκούτας και Dhaka, της ινδικής θρησκείας, φιλοσοφίας, ποίησης και πολιτισμού. Επίσης βιβλία περιηγητών με περιγραφές ταξιδίων στην Ινδία από τα τέλη του 18ου αιώνα μέχρι τον 20ό, παλαιοί ιστορικοί χάρτες της Ινδίας και αλληλογραφία του Μ. Σπύρου με Ινδούς καθηγητές.
Series IV: Indian newspapers about the Greek Revolution and the Greek Captain Nikolas Kefalas. Στους φακέλους 46 ώς 54 ευρίσκονται αντίγραφα ινδικών αγγλόφωνων εφημερίδων του 19ου αιώνα με άρθρα αναφερόμενα κυρίως στην Ελληνική Επανάσταση, καθώς και στο μεταγενέστερο ελληνικό κράτος ώς τα τέλη του 19ου αιώνα. Επίσης, αντίγραφα ινδικών αγγλόφωνων εφημερίδων με άρθρα σχετικά με τον Καπετάν Νικόλαο Κεφαλά, απεσταλμένο στην ελληνική κοινότητα Καλκούτας των επαναστατημένων Ελλήνων προς διενέργεια εράνου υπέρ της Ελληνικής Επανάστασης. Ακόμα, στην ενότητα αυτή καταχωρείται αντίγραφο της συγγραφής του Ν. Κεφαλά για το ταξίδι του στην Ινδία το έτος 1824 και μεταφράσεις του. Τέλος, περιέχονται βιβλιογραφικά δελτία των ερευνών του Μ.
